This Thunderbolts Tribute Unleashes a Founding Hero Who's Way Too Extreme for the MCU

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* are seeing a surge in popularity now that their inaugural foray into the MCU has gone over well with fans and critics alike, a welcome surprise if only because they’re a team comprised of pre-existing movie and television show characters that aren’t exactly household names. In a new set of cosplay images, a founding member of the original comic version of the Thunderbolts, Citizen V, finally gets his due in the real world, showing how he could be the next addition to the team in the MCU’s future.
Recently sharing his comic-accurate take on Citizen V in a series of posts on Instagram, Namor the Sub-Mariner Cosplay (@namorcosplay) is all about creating and wearing Marvel costumes that do their comic (or MCU) counterparts justice, with this rare Citizen V cosplay being no exception to that rule. More often than not, Namor cosplays as the comic character he takes his namesake from, Namor the Sub-Mariner, but outside of portraying this Marvel mutant in all of his Atlantean glory, Namor the cosplayer has also tried his hand at embodying Doctor Doom, Ronan the Accuser, Nova, Baron Zemo, Bastion, and more.
Marvel’s Citizen V Gets a Rare Cosplay Tribute Worthy of the MCU’s Thunderbolts Team Cosplay Design by Namor the Sub-Mariner Cosplay (@namorcosplay) with Photography by Eric Carroll (@ericcarrollphoto) and SFX by Jane (@janebergstrom) A character first associated with the World War II-era team V-Battalion, Citizen V originated with a man named John Watkins and is a heroic role passed down to at least eight others over the course of eight decades — a mantle eventually tainted by the villainous Baron Helmut Zemo in his attempt to trick the world into believing he was one of the good guys. Forming the original Thunderbolts with other supervillains disguised as superheroes, this new Masters of Evil was defeated by the combined might of the Avengers and The Fantastic Four, leaving the Citizen V legacy open once more.

Posts 1 Played by Daniel Brühl in the MCU, Namor’s take on Baron Zemo via Citizen V is everything comic fans could want and shows exactly how to treat the character should he make his way into the live-action space. Standing defiant in the first image as he brandishes a sword and stares at viewers with a silvery masked glare, Namor’s American flag-colored costume pops even in shadow, with the second post giving fans a closer look at Namor’s design and the eerie comic-accurate facemask that sells this Citizen V cosplay in a way that toes the line between hero and villain.
New Citizen V Cosplay Shows Exactly How Baron Zemo Can Return to the MCU Baron Zemo Was Last Seen in the MCU's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Series Finally, Namor recruits fellow cosplayers Michelle Waffle-Otero (@meshellwaffleo) and D’Manda Martini (@dmandamartini) for a quick reel that gives fans a mini Thunderbolts reunion, bringing Citizen V, Songbird, and Meteorite, respectively, back together for an intimidating display of evil. Currently in Marvel Comics, the mantle of Citizen V is held by none other than Valentina Allegra de Fontaine — played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the MCU’s Thunderbolts* — so there’s no reason why the same can’t eventually be true for Marvel"s live-action space, making Namor the Sub-Mariner Cosplay’s (@namorcosplay) take on Citizen V the perfect live-action reference point for this founding Thunderbolts member.
